St Anthony Head Coastal Battery

Originally built in the 19th century and now owned by the National Trust, take a walk around the remains of this coastal defence facility and view the late Victorian gun platform and observation post. Ample car parking is available close by.

St Anthony Head Lighthouse

Constructed in1835 the original lighthouse was built to warn ships of the offshore Manacles Rocks and Black Rock. Over the years the lighting system has been upgraded and since 1987 has been unmanned and automated. It is not open to the public but is worth the walk around the headland to take a look and many scenes from 'Fraggle Rock' from the 1980's were filmed here.

St Anthony-in-Roseland Church

From the waters edge you can see the church towers peeping out behind Place Manor but to get there you have to follow a narrow footpath from the road. Overlooking the creek, the church is the ancestral home of the Spry family and and is thought to date back to the 12th century. Take a look at the carved woodwork on top of the walls as it is actually Cornish tin painted to resemble wood.

St Mawes Castle

This impressive castle is one of the best-preserved of Henry VIII's coastal fortresses. Together with Pendennis Castle on the other side of the Fal Estaury, St Mawes stood guard against attacks from France and Spain during the 16th Century. Today, its superb location, with stunning views of the coastline, makes it a great spot to enjoy a picnic. Take the ferry from Falmouth for a day out without the car.

With an uphill walk to reach it, the church overlooks St Mawes and the sea beyond. Locals and guests are made welcome and service information is available on their website. During August there is a charity shop in the church hall from 10am - 4pm every day except Sunday and all monies raised go towards local charities.
